Dr. Shailendra B. Patel, BM, ChB, DPhil, FNLA
Dr. Shailesh B. Patel is Professor of Endocrinology at the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH and Staff Attending at the VAMC, Cincinnati, OH and holds the Albert W. Vontz, Jr Chair in Diabetes. Dr. Patel attended Oxford University, UK for his undergraduate (BA Physiological Sciences), medical (BM, ChB) and post-graduate training (DPhil). His fellowship training was in Metabolic and Molecular Medicine (Endocrinology) at Northwick Park Hospital, London. He moved to the US in 1993, and at UT Southwestern Medical School, Dallas, TX, completed another fellowship in Endocrinology. He was an elected Fellow of the Royal College of Medicine, Fellow of the American College of Physicians, Fellow of the National Lipid Association (active) and remains a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation.
He has served as Division Director of Endocrinology at the Medical College of Wisconsin and University of Cincinnati and remains an active clinician at UC and VAMC, Cincinnati, with a focus on Endocrine neoplasia and rare genetic disorder management.
Dr. Patel identified the genetic defect underlying Sitosterolemia and is a self-recognized expert in lipid metabolism.
His current research involves the role of cholesterol in embryonic development (human disorders of Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome-DHCR7, desmosterolosis-DHCR24), the role of ABCG5 and ABCG8 in cholesterol and xenosterol protection in humans as well as animal models.
He has mentored several academicians, many of whom now run their independent research and clinical programs.
If he was not doing what he is doing now, he says he will be happy planting golf-balls in shrubbery, waterways and patio doors & windows.
